Model Context Protocol (MCP) Fundamentals

Model Context Protocol (MCP) Fundamentals

A practical two day introductory course for participants who are new to Model Context Protocol and want to understand how MCP connects AI applications with external tools, systems, and information. The agenda introduces the MCP architecture, hosts, clients, servers, tools, resources, prompts, transports, and basic security considerations. The course focuses on building a clear conceptual and practical foundation without moving into advanced server architecture or complex integrations

What will you learn?

You will learn what Model Context Protocol is, why it is useful, and how its main components work together. You will understand how MCP servers expose tools, resources, and prompts and how AI applications discover and use these capabilities. You will also learn how to connect to, inspect, test, and reason about simple MCP integrations while considering basic security and access requirements.

  • Understand the purpose and architecture of Model Context Protocol
  • Distinguish between MCP hosts, clients, servers, tools, resources, and prompts
  • Understand basic local and remote MCP connection patterns
  • Evaluate simple MCP integrations with appropriate security and access considerations

Requirements:

  • Suitable for participants who are new to Model Context Protocol
  • Basic familiarity with generative AI tools and AI assistants is helpful
  • General understanding of APIs or application integrations is useful but not required
  • No previous MCP experience required

Course Outline*:

*We customize the course outline and content to your specific needs and relevant use cases.

Module 1: Introduction to Model Context Protocol

  • Understanding what MCP is and which integration problems it addresses
  • Positioning MCP between AI applications, models, business systems, and data sources
  • Comparing standardized MCP integration with individually built point to point connections
  • Exploring common MCP use cases such as accessing files, databases, APIs, and business tools

Module 2: MCP architecture and communication model

  • Understanding the roles of MCP hosts, clients, and servers
  • Following a basic interaction from an AI application to an MCP server and back
  • Understanding capability discovery and how clients learn what a server provides
  • Introducing the request, response, and notification model at a conceptual level

Module 3: Tools, resources, and prompts

  • Understanding tools as capabilities that allow a model to perform actions
  • Understanding resources as information that applications can make available as context
  • Understanding prompts as reusable templates for structured interactions
  • Choosing between tools, resources, and prompts for simple integration scenarios

Module 4: Local and remote connections

  • Understanding stdio as a common approach for local MCP servers
  • Understanding Streamable HTTP for remotely accessible MCP servers
  • Comparing local and remote MCP deployment scenarios
  • Following the basic connection lifecycle between an MCP client and server

Module 5: Connecting to and exploring MCP servers

  • Understanding how an MCP client is configured to connect to a server
  • Discovering the tools, resources, and prompts exposed by a server
  • Reading names, descriptions, parameters, and schemas to understand available capabilities
  • Testing simple interactions and interpreting successful and unsuccessful responses

Module 6: Understanding a simple MCP server

  • Reviewing the basic structure and responsibilities of an MCP server
  • Defining a simple tool with clearly described inputs and outputs
  • Exposing a simple resource or reusable prompt
  • Understanding how an MCP SDK reduces the amount of protocol handling required by developers

Module 7: Designing useful MCP capabilities

  • Translating a business or application requirement into a suitable MCP capability
  • Writing clear tool names, descriptions, parameters, and expected outputs
  • Keeping individual tools focused and understandable
  • Distinguishing read only information access from actions that can change external systems

Module 8: Security, responsible use, and next steps

  • Understanding that MCP access does not automatically make every connected operation safe
  • Considering authentication, permissions, least privilege, and sensitive data access
  • Applying human confirmation and appropriate controls to actions with meaningful side effects
  • Building a practical checklist for evaluating and planning future MCP integrations
