A beginner friendly course on turning data into clear, trustworthy visuals with Tableau. Participants learn how to connect to data, build core charts, design simple dashboards, and share results safely.

What will you learn?

You will understand Tableau’s workflow from data connection to publishing. You will create clean visualizations, apply basic calculations, add interactivity, and prepare a small dashboard that answers a practical question.

After this training you will be confident in:

  • Navigating Tableau, connecting to files and databases, and shaping data
  • Building core charts and choosing the right visual for the job
  • Using filters, groups, sets, and parameters for flexible analysis
  • Creating a simple, readable dashboard and sharing it responsibly

Requirements:

  • Tableau Desktop or Tableau Cloud authoring access
  • Sample datasets you can use safely during training
  • Comfort with spreadsheets and basic data concepts

Module 1: Getting started with Tableau
  • Interface tour and the data to visuals workflow
  • Dimensions vs measures, discrete vs continuous fields
  • Show Me, marks card, shelves, and pills explained
  • Saving projects and organizing workbooks

Module 2: Connecting and shaping data
  • Connecting to Excel, CSV, and common databases
  • Joins vs unions and when to use relationships
  • Data types, roles, and geographic roles
  • Cleaning with Data Source page and basic pivots

Module 3: Visual analytics basics
  • Bar, line, area, scatter, and highlight tables
  • Sorting, grouping, and quick totals
  • Filters, top N, and context filters
  • Tooltips and number formatting for readability

Module 4: Building a first dashboard
  • Layout, containers, and spacing for clean design
  • Using actions for simple cross filtering
  • Titles, legends, and annotation best practices
  • Checklist for clarity and accessibility
Module 5: Calculations you will use often
  • Row level vs aggregate calculations
  • Calculated fields for ratios and per capita views
  • Table calculations for running totals and percent of total
  • Quick LOD concepts for fixed comparisons

Module 6: Interactivity and parameters
  • Hierarchies and drill down patterns
  • Parameter controls to switch metrics or views
  • Dynamic titles, reference lines, and bands
  • Simple what if analysis with parameters

Module 7: Dates, maps, and small multiples
  • Date parts vs date values and custom date hierarchies
  • Creating maps, layers, and custom territories
  • Density and symbol maps with meaningful color and size
  • Small multiples to compare categories at a glance

Module 8: Publishing, data refresh, and governance
  • Packaging workbooks and publishing to Tableau Cloud or Server
  • Permissions, data source publishing, and refresh basics
  • Versioning, descriptions, and documentation in the workbook
  • Sharing dashboards responsibly with context and caveats
