Physical Security Fundamentals

A beginner friendly course on building and operating a practical physical security program. Participants learn core concepts, risk assessment, layered defenses, and clear procedures for prevention, detection, and response across offices, campuses, and events.

What will you learn?

You will understand how to assess risks, design layered controls, and run day to day procedures that protect people, assets, and information. You will apply simple checklists, incident playbooks, and improvement cycles that fit real organizations.

After this training you will be confident in:

  • Explaining core principles like deterrence, detection, delay, and response
  • Conducting basic site risk assessments and prioritizing controls
  • Designing access control, visitor management, and perimeter protections
  • Using surveillance and alarm data for monitoring and investigations
  • Writing clear policies, post orders, and incident reports
  • Coordinating with life safety, continuity, and stakeholders

Requirements:

  • General familiarity with facilities or office operations is helpful
  • Bring a simple floor plan or site description if available
  • No prior security experience required

  • Reception posture, badging etiquette, and tailgating prevention
  • Secure areas, media storage, and clean desk practices
  • Life safety integration with evacuation, shelter, and ADA considerations

Module 5: Surveillance and alarms
  • Camera placement fundamentals and privacy aware coverage
  • Alarm types, zones, and response coordination
  • Using logs and alerts for investigations and maintenance

Module 6: Operations and guard force management
  • Post orders, rounds, and escalation paths
  • Shift handovers, communications, and incident logging
  • Vendor coordination and service level expectations
Module 7: Incident response and reporting
  • Initial assessment, containment, and notification checklists
  • Evidence preservation basics and chain of custody awareness
  • Writing clear incident reports for management and regulators

Module 8: Business continuity alignment
  • Critical functions, alternate work areas, and resource staging
  • Power, HVAC, water, and building systems dependency mapping
  • Coordination with IT, HR, facilities, and local authorities

  • Security policy hierarchy and approvals

  • Building a one year improvement plan with milestones
